Teenagers in Haiti, including our youth home students below, face some of the toughest obstacles to completing their education –

  • many are forced to drop out of school to help support their families by selling goods on the street
  • many are below grade level in school due to the inability to pay for school expenses and can’t catch up
  • teens “aging out” of orphanages must leave the only home they know when they turn 16, often ending the opportunity to go to school provided by donors
  • many are living in abusive circumstances at home

Pou Timoun bought an acre of land near H.A.C. and funded construction of a large home to serve as the site for this new project that will house 12 of the most vulnerable teenagers in the community. These young adults will be provided with safe housing, tuition, uniform, books, food and basic necessities so they can focus on completing their secondary education. The program will also provide access to life skill enrichment classes as well as individual and group therapy.

A day of bonding at the beach with TEEN emPOWERment PROJECT students prior to living together as a group included a spontaneous snorkeling trip. For some of the students, it was their first time on a boat.

Courses in life-skill areas such as finance, computer, relationships, workplace professionalism, personal health and well-being will be presented on a regular basis by Haitian and foreign volunteers who specialize in a particular field.

The project will employ three house-parent/academic advisors who will rotate living in the home with the students in addition to three household staff members, a project manager and a 24 hour professional security guard.

As this is a life changing and, possibly, life-saving opportunity for a young person, we need sponsors who understand the need to be consistent and committed. Sponsors will receive bi-annual project progress reports and occasional updates on the children. Thank you!
