Education for orphaned children.
For orphaned children with little or no support upon “ageing out” of the orphanage, the minimum of a high school education is absolutely imperative to find solid employment so they can support themselves and become productive citizens for their country. Pou Timoun helps send all of the school-aged children living at Foyer de Sion orphanage to school at Institute Mixte Shalom des Feres at the Haitian American Caucus – Haiti campus.
Please support our commitment to educating orphaned children by sponsoring one year of a child’s education. Schools in Haiti are not free so many children are prevented from obtaining an education. At $450 per student (including tuition, uniform, backpack & books) the cost to educate all of the 100+ children living in the orphanage is over $50,000 each year.
Three years ago, we partnered with nearby community organization, Haitian American Caucus-Hait. The director of HAC-Haiti, Samuel Darguin, and his team strive to provide their students with opportunities not normally found in a traditional Haitian school. The school’s enrichment opportunities include english, science, photography, dance, music and physical education. Thanks to the strong volunteer connections Sam and HAC have fostered through the years, the children also benefit from medical/dental check-ups, trauma support groups, self-confidence building and more. Currently, the school is looking for the financial support to add a science lab, reading room and a tablet library.
Luckily, the school is a short walk from the orphanage allowing the 3-5 year olds to attend Kindergarten as there is no means of transporting so many children to school.
Below are the children living at Foyer de Sion orphanage that attend L’Institute Mixte Shalom des Freres.
